New Roots Phoenix is a food security and agriculture program of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Phoenix, an international aid organization that helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. At New Roots, we utilize agriculture and community to empower those enrolled in our programs to make connections to the land, food, and people in Arizona.

Monthly Farm Stand
Fuel your health and support your community by shopping our pesticide-free, locally grown harvest. Every purchase directly empowers New Roots Phoenix farmers. Urban Food Hub
Step into CamelBackyard, a vibrant urban farm located just steps away from the Phoenix light rail at 17th Ave and Camelback Rd. As a bustling community food hub, we are home to a aquaponics greenhouse and 30 garden beds and 40 in ground beds for members.Our shaded outdoor classroom and community kitchen serve as the heart of the garden, hosting inspiring workshops and events. Equipped with professional prep spaces and a dedicated harvest processing area, it’s great for washing and sharing fresh bounty.

Our specialist-led nutrition seminars empower participants by teaching evidence-based healthy eating, mindful cooking techniques, and comprehensive food label analysis. Through informative market tours, we provide youth and community members with critical media literacy skills to navigate complex food marketing and identify deceptive advertising tactics.

Aquaponics
Leading desert agriculture for over ten years, CamelBackyard operates a premier high-tech aquaponics ecosystem right in the city. We empower growers to master soil-less, water-efficient farming, scaling sustainable business models for a changing climate. Join our quarterly tech-focused workshops to explore the future of food security, powered by a dedicated collective of volunteers driving impact through innovation.
Community farm plots
Our fully operational community led farm operates with the shared ownership of over 40 households. Water, tools and meetings are shared with responsibilites and tasks for everyone. The site offeres 4x8 garden beds for beginners and 30'x 3' irrigated in ground beds for experienced farmers. The farm operates on two 6 month growing seasons October-March and April- September with an upfront commitment from each participant to water, maintain, weed and attend monthly growers meetings. Staff offer technical assistance and workshops on topics ranging from production, food safety and marketing for farmers of all skill levels.
